The rails on either side are separated from this main section by a narrow grooves that run all the way around the ring, and both the grooves and rails are polished to a high shine. The center portion of this ring where the sapphires are set is sandblasted to create a fine, almost velvety surface. The rich blue of the sapphires also contrasts nicely with the brilliant white of the platinum band, and the matte surface they’re set in really helps their sparkle stand out. This sets them at odds with the straight rails on either side, and the contrast helps bring some interesting interplay to the design. There are six princess cut blue sapphires in this ring, all of which are bezel set in a compass position so that their corners point north, south, east, and west. But after seeing mock ups of the piece with and without the design, they decided to go for the smooth surface seen here. The clients thought at first that they wanted to have a Celtic knot design running down the center portion of the ring.
